The film presents a revolutionary view of the couple, because it changes the customs, habits and stereotypes about separation, showing a modern, peaceful and conflict-free relationship between two middle-aged people who are simply looking for happiness. It is a film about uncertainty, about being a couple after 15 years of being together, about the midlife crisis and the doubts that it brings. The film also presents different shades of thought on many topics, such as love, friendship and family relationships. Complex thinking summed up in one simple sentence: “Volveréis” as in the statement: “You will definitely come back together” OR the same sentence but with a question mark: “Volveréis? As in “Will you come back together?”. Jonàs Trueba shares his doubts throughout the film It is like a circle of repetition, a circle of life or a vicious circle, so to speak, and somehow, as the. film goes on, we start to doubt whether it is a good idea or not, whether the editing will reveal to us that it is fiction. Jonàs Trueba plays with us as much as he is sincere. For example, it seems that the director shares his doubts about the editing and the relevance of his film (the film that we, the audience, are watching!) by sharing the doubts of the main characters about their fate as a couple or as individuals through the editing of THEIR film that they both try to end… just like their relationship that is coming to an end! This film is special because it is witty. It is a hymn to dialogue, love, respect. Its main characters almost never argue or quarrel. It is very modern in its approach to the couple, very anti-conflict. Both of them just shared their thoughts sincerely. They somehow love each other at every step of their thinking, despite the doubts that are everywhere, in one look, word or one shot. To the question: are you happy? One answers yes and the other says no, but both seem to regret their answer as soon as they say it. This melancholic tone fits the turning point in their lives, what they are going through, because they have to turn a new page, start a new chapter, start a new season exactly like this rather sad, uncertain and ending summer in Madrid. Little by little and through the personal journey of the characters we understand that life is like the editing of a film and everything can be turned upside down: the beginning can become the end, the apparent end can mean a new beginning and thanks to someone’s decision it can be completely the opposite again. A beautiful, witty film, with lots of winks. I recommend it!
